INTRO

El Obraje sits at a remarkable 2,200 metres in the south of Nariño — one of the highest-altitude coffee farms in Colombia — where volcanic mineral-rich soils, dramatic temperature swings, and proximity to several volcanic peaks create one of the most distinctive terroirs in the country. Pablo Andres Guerrero's oma Lot is a Washed Geisha of unusual elegance: orange blossom florals, ripe tangerine, and a lingering blossom honey sweetness that speaks directly to the altitude and careful processing.

El Obraje's Geisha trees were introduced from Panama in 2011, starting with just 2,000 plants and growing to over 9,000 today — a testament to Pablo's belief in the terroir's capacity to produce world-class Geisha.

THE PRODUCER

Pablo Andres Guerrero inherited El Obraje from his father in Tangua, Nariño — a region historically devoted to cereal farming that transitioned to coffee in the early 2000s. Pablo began selling to the local cooperative before transitioning to specialty production around 2010, building his own processing facility. El Obraje spans nearly 100 hectares, of which only 25 hectares are currently cultivated with coffee; the rest has been returned to natural forest reserve. The farm sits at around 2,200 MASL on rocky, mineral-rich soil with a climate influenced by nearby volcanic mountains. In 2011, Pablo imported Geisha seeds from Panama — 2,000 trees initially, expanding to 7,000 more in 2015.

THE PROCESS

The Washed process at El Obraje involves:

  • 🍒 Selective hand-picking — Only the ripest cherries are harvested from the high-altitude Geisha trees
  • Sorting — Cherries are sorted to ensure uniformity
  • 🔧 Pulping — Skin is removed to expose mucilage-covered parchment
  • 🧪 Fermentation — Parchment undergoes controlled fermentation to break down mucilage
  • 💧 Washing — Thoroughly washed with clean water
  • ☀️ Raised-bed drying — Dried slowly at high altitude, where cool temperatures extend the drying period and develop complexity

The combination of extreme altitude, volcanic soils, and careful Washed processing gives El Obraje's Geisha a distinctive brightness and lingering elegance.

THE CUP

A bright, lingering Geisha of delicate floral character and citrus elegance. Orange blossom and tangerine lead with a lemonade freshness, finishing with a long blossom honey sweetness that reflects both the Geisha variety and El Obraje's remarkable altitude.
