THE PRODUCER

Mery Garcito produces coffee at Finca La Bendición with a focus on meticulous harvesting and careful washed processing designed to highlight the expressive character of rare varieties like Mejorada.

THE VARIETAL — MEJORADA

The origins of Mejorada — sometimes referred to as Typica Mejorado — remain somewhat mysterious, though it is now widely believed to have originated from a Nestlé coffee research project in Pichincha, Ecuador.

A technician named Don Olger Rogel first identified two exceptional F1 hybrid varieties with unusually high cup quality potential: Sidra and Mejorada. Seeds from the project were later shared with producer Pepe Jijón, who became the first farmer to cultivate Mejorada commercially at Finca Soledad in Imbabura, Ecuador, in 2010.

Despite the name “Typica Mejorado,” genetic research suggests that Mejorada is not descended from Typica at all, but instead has Bourbon lineage. The name is thought to reference its elegant, Typica-like flavour profile rather than its genetic makeup.

Today, Mejorada remains closely associated with Ecuador, though small plantings are beginning to emerge in origins such as Colombia and Costa Rica.

THE PROCESS

🍒 Selective harvesting — Carefully picked ripe cherries
💧 Washed processing — Emphasises clarity, florality, and structure
☀️ Slow drying — Preserves sweetness and aromatic complexity

THE CUP

A refined and expressive cup with vivid citrus sweetness and layered florals. Bright Sumo mandarin acidity is balanced by the soft elegance of vanilla orchid and the comforting sweetness of graham cracker.
